" since it clearly is the end of 71 (don't let that wascal JOTS tell you otherwise). "

Tell you what? That William Tell hates to listen to THE best tour any band including the Grateful Dead ever played? Europe 72. Gotta give you shit on that one my friend

Actually, though I wouldn't admit it the other day in the midst of our discussion, truth is I cheat: I DO listen to the Euro 72 album (just don't do much with the shows of that yr...yet!).

My all-time favorite '72 show is a fine place to start, it even has a jammed out Dark Star (contradicting my earlier post, lol):

Great sound quality (Miller, who else?) great setlist, great performances of almost everything! :D

I don't care much for that Dark Star. It never rescues itself from the depths of space. I can deal with a little post-verse space if it goes into fantastic jamming a la 9/19/70 but listening to that one I kept waiting for a soaring jam to start and, before I knew it, Dew had started.

I agree about the Dark Star. I just meant it was long, lol. The atonal deep space doesn't do much for me either. This is kind of what I was getting at about '72 being a weak year for jamming. However, check out the lovely PigPen smoothness on "Good Lovin'" at the show I recommended. That's my fave 'jam' from that show... (that AM Dew is awesome as well).

I'd agree that that's not my favorite Star of that tour (that show's probably near the bottom compared to the rest of April/May '72) - but I think that's part of the beauty of Dark Star - since it was so open-ended, they weren't obligated to get back to pretty melodies every time - if they felt like staying in demented space & insect noise, they were free to do so. So even if it's not a Star like 5/23 or 5/25, it's still an interesting voyage to me....

Outstanding!

You know, the more I listen to the opening energy of the 6-14-68 show with my fav StSt (the first song = feedback) the more I appreciate how amazing that was: 3 min or so into the 11, and I like every second of it!
